Dawn of a new era: motorcycle engine with gasoline direct injection
Tuesday, 13 October 2009 07:31

Author: Haiko Rading, Teamleader Engine, KA-RaceIng

After a development time of one and a half years our goal has been reached. Thanks to a cooperation with Bosch Engineering GmbH, the Institute of Reciprocating Engines (IFKM) at the University of Karlsruhe (KIT) and a great effort on our own part, we were able to modify a standard multi-point fuel injection motorcycle engine to a gasoline direct injection engine.

We are proud to announce that it successfully passed its first test run on our own test bench. The 600cc straight-four Honda PC 35 engine from our race car served as a basis for this project. We vastly modified the cylinder head for mounting the injectors. The big challenges were to achieve a
good carburation at revs over 9000 rpm and to find the best position for the injectors, without decreasing the reliability and the rigidity of the engine.

With our new gasoline direct injection system we want to increase the engine’s efficiency and reduce the race car’s fuel consumption at the same time. Time will be now spent testing on our test bench, in order to put the system to the acid test before it is employed in our car.
We would like to thank our two co-operation partners the Bosch Engineering GmbH and the Institute of Reciprocating Engines (IFKM). Without their know-how and competence we would not have been able to realize this huge project.
